Dr. Michael Witsch

Chief digital medical health officer, CHL

After his medical studies in Ulm/Germany, Dr. Witsch worked for 15 years at the Children’s University Hospital in Mannheim/Germany. He served as head of the pediatric endocrinology and diabetology department from 2003-2009. In 2009, he joined the DECCP (Diabetes and Endocrinology Care Clinique Pédiatrique) team at the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg. The multi-national environment there fostered his interest in international cooperation. Besides being a physician, he has a passion for IT, which led him to develop a clinical information system for children’s hospitals. His main focus lies on databases, data processing and benchmarking as well as the incorporation of benchmarking principles in daily patient care. He sees himself as a human interface between health care professionals and IT specialists, aiming to achieve a win-win situation with digitalization and data management and to create valid data for research and benchmarking without additional workload for the staff members. Demonstrating that this is possible, the DECCP team is the only centre in Luxembourg which was awarded the certification “Full member of the European Reference Network“. He was recently appointed "chief digital medical health officer" and supports the effort of digitalisation at the CHL. As leader of the chapter “E-medicine” of the national cancer plan, he coordinates expectations and strategies on a national level. He is also an active member of SWEET, an NGO that fosters benchmarking in pediatric diabetes worldwide, where he creates the international benchmarking report.
