COMPANY DESCRIPTION :

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, the environment and IT. Created from the merger of two former Public Research Centres (CRP – Gabriel Lippmann and CRP Henri Tudor), LIST brings together a critical mass of researchers and innovation experts to develop innovative and competitive solutions in response to the key needs of Luxembourgish and European companies. LIST’s headquarters are located at the very heart of Luxembourg’s new Research and Innovation Campus on the former industrial site of Esch-Belval. Around LIST, a large number of innovation partners call the Campus their home, including the University, various other research centres, joint laboratories, start-ups and incubators. By transferring technology to society as well as local companies, LIST, and the research community as a whole, contribute strongly to the building of tomorrow’s Luxembourg.

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology organizes its research activities into three main RDI departments:

• The “Environmental Research & Innovation” (ERIN) department comprises more than 180 life, environmental and IT scientists and engineers across four research units. These units bring together the necessary interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to tackle the major environmental challenges our society is facing today, including climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

• The “IT for Innovative Services” (ITIS) department conducts research to develop models, methods, software and devices for smart systems, fusing human and technological aspects. Its ambition is to build trust around services, to develop new services with a high level of informatics and to support the innovation of IT-based services. The ITIS department is home to 110 scientists and software engineers in three research units.

• The “Materials Research and Technology” (MRT) department contributes, with its 170 researchers and engineers, to the emergence of enabling technologies that underpin the innovation processes of local and international industry. MRT’s activities hinge on three thematic pillars: nanomaterials and nanotechnology, sustainable composite materials and manufacturing and process technologies, including scientific instrumentation. The department also features two high-tech platforms, one focusing on composites and one providing characterization and testing. Both platforms are open to LIST research staff as well as other Luxembourgish stakeholders. Lastly, the department leverages its charged particle beam expertise through the development of new nano-imaging and nano-analysis technologies.

LIST’s RDI departments develop the expertise, know-how, and technological building blocks to support a number of sectorial and cross-disciplinary programmes dedicated to cities (Smart Cities), space (Smart Space), finance (Smart Finance), and industry (Smart Manufacturing).
